Today is September 23, 2015 -- the first day of fall! But arguably more important, it's the 8th Annual Falls Prevention Awareness Day (FPAD)! The day is observed to raise awareness about how to prevent fall-related injuries among older adults. This year's theme is Take a Stand to Prevent Falls.
Falls are the leading cause of fatal and non-fatal injuries among older adults. Falls threaten the safety and independence of seniors, and generate substantial economic and personal costs. However, falling can be prevented, and is not an inevitable result of aging. Through practical lifestyle adjustments, community partnerships, and evidence-based falls prevention programs, the number of falls among seniors can be greatly reduced.
